Question regarding Australian made Alvey Centre Pin Fishing Reels?

I have been looking at Alvey Reels on the internet and I like the look of them, especially the side/easy cast system they have as a feature on them, however they look more like Sea Fishing Reels and given that they are made in Australia which is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean this would make sense. However I live in the UK and I would like to know if Alvey Fishing Reels would be okay to use here in a non sea fishing scenario, such as General Float Fishing perhaps?

With the many advances in Spinning reel design today the Alvey seems a bit archaic UNLESS your using it for Surf fishing.

(I'm not trying to be rude!)

The pro's & con's to an Alvey seem to be:

#1.) Mega distance casting- When Fishing in the surf, at times, you DO need to cast over 75-100 + yards. Heck, using the Alvey, you could cast ACROSS some good freshwater fishing streams and ponds I know!!! (lol) (Understand, though, that you COULD cast a spinning reel outfit those mega distances if your using a 15FT rod and light diameter line.)

#2.) Low maintenance- Due to it's "plastic-like" construction and few moving parts the Alvey does have an advantage over any conventional/spinning outfit, (esp in saltwater). I don't know about you, but I like the ability to feel "confidant" that your reel won't be ruined if it takes a "dip" in the ocean. But in your case, (using it in freshwater), that is a moot point.

In my opinion, I think the Alvey would make a fine Saltwater Surf & Pier fishing outfit. I'm sure you COULD use it in freshwater without incident but it seems a bit "overkill".

Why overkill?

#1.) When you purchase an Alvey Reel you must get there "special rod" so you can achieve their advertized mega-distance casting. While watching the How to Cast training video I noticed that the rods seem a bit "noodly" and "slow action". In my opinion, those rods would make "short work" against most freshwater fish , (except, say, large Carp or Salmon). Seems a bit "overkill" for your average freshwater fish. Heck, you may be the luckiest angler alive and ALWAYS catch a limit of MONSTER fish when you go angling! But, If your like me,
your average catch is not always a "wall hanger". (LOL)

But, my least favorite thing about the Alvey is the fact that you have to use your finger to level-wind the line in. When I'm offshore, fighting large fish like Mahi Mahi, Kingfish, Wahoo, Sails, Tuna I don't MIND using my "finger-muscle" to keep the line straight, but it seems a hassle to have to do it for smaller fish, (in my opinion).

Otherwise, this reel would make a Surf-fisherman drool! (lol)

Hope this helps ya somehow? Go check out the video's and pay close attention to the rod's. Good fishing!

What do you know about Deep sea fishing?

im doing a prject so here are some of my other questions:
- what do you need to go jungle hiking?
-Can you go kayaking in a river?

Well, let's start out that most "deep sea" fishing isn't done in the "deep sea". Most deep sea fishing trips are within a few miles of land, over the continental shelf at depth usually less than 100 feet. The term deep sea has always had more appeal, especially for landlubber tourists who were used to fishing in shallow lakes or streams. There are, of course, lots of sport fisherman, who fish in depressions and canyons for larger game fish, but that is only a small percentage of the deep sea trips. "deep sea fishing can take place off of private boats, charter boats or "head boats"(also know as party boats or day trip boats). It can involve trolling, bait casting or bottom fishing.

I have been fishing my whole life (56 years old) but I have never done any fresh water fishing. But I have done lots of "deep sea" fishing and surf fishing. Luckily, I am not a real good fisherman, so I don't have to interrupt my relaxation actually catching fish.

What would be the best lure to go with for winter largemouth bass fishing in eastern long island?

I know deeper waters and slower retrieve…but its still tempting to use my old standby a light colored jitterbug. Is it pointless to use a top floating jig in the winter? I fished a rattletrap and jig & pig at Ronkonkoma for six hours yesterday with nary a bite. Has anyone fished the Northwestern side(opposite of the falls) of Southard's with any success? Whats the best overall advice for today's trip? Thanks!!!

Sounds like you got everything covered.

Try to fish steeper banks.Bass like to move vertically in cold winter water. A jig and pig really cant be beat IMO for cold weather fishin'. Just crawl it along the bottom, and give it a little twitch once and a while. Being that it's cold don't expect a lot of bits. You can also give the good ole' plastic worm a try.

You also might want to try Jigging a spoon just straight up and down. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, but its something different when the bass have a case of lockjaw. Remember when your fishing in cold water bass aren't going to chase your bait so 90% of the time your going to have to run it right in front of his face.

Hope this helps…Good Luck

how do you get in a bass(fishing) club?

i LOVE to go fishing and I catch bass all the time and i want to get in tournaments or a club or something. how would i do that? im 15 years old.

Ask around your local tackle shops . The club I'm in is usually looking for new members and we have our 1st meeting in January. Our club recommends that you have to be 16, but they are all different. We have boaters and non-boaters. You will learn a TON of new techniques, etc. You can also go the bass fishing homepage.com and find clubs in your area. I highly recommend joining one if you like to bass fish. Warning..it is addictive !
